Lately in the Northern Hemisphere many places have had the wonderful opportunity to see the Northern Lights. Did you know the colorful display of lights are called Auroras. If you are near the North Pole they are called aurora borealis but if near the South Pole they are called the aurora australis or the southern lights. These are caused by the sun releasing energy and particles, which then interact with the gasses in our atmosphere. Oxygen gives off green and red light. Nitrogen glows blue and purple. Were you fortunate enough to see the Northern Lights?
Summer is coming (at least in the northern hemisphere) and at night you might see little flashes of light outside. Did you know, fireflies are not flies or bugs?! They are in fact beetles! As we are getting to the colder months of the year (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) have you ever tried to make a super tall snowman? Did you know…the world record for the tallest snowwoman is just a few feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty at 122 ft 1 in tall!!! It took a month to finish and 13 million pounds of snow!!! When you think of a forest of trees you normally think of many individual trees. But…
Did you know… Pando is an Aspen tree that started from a single seed and is now believed to be the largest single organism ever found!
According to the US Forest Service Pando is believed to be a single organism spreading over 10 acres and looks like 40,000 individual trees! The biggest difference between Pando and other forest is the root system is all interconnected.
